Why does Jottings want the camera?

To photograph the page so it can find the passage you read. The photograph is read on your phone and deleted the moment it has been read. It is never uploaded.

Why the microphone?

To hear the passage you read aloud and the note that follows. The recording is sent once to be turned into text and is then discarded.

Do I need an account?

Yes. Your phone number is how your notes find you, so signing in on a new phone brings them with you.

No passcode arrived.

Check the number you typed, including the country code, and wait a minute before asking for another. If none arrives, write to us with the number and we will look at what happened to it.

Jottings did not find the page number.

It reads the folio off the photograph, so the page number has to be in the frame and legible. Front matter numbered in roman numerals is left blank on purpose, because page xii and page 12 cannot be told apart afterwards. A note saves perfectly well without one, and you can add it by hand.

The passage came out wrong.

Edit it. Tap the note and correct the text — recognition is good but not perfect, and a wrong word in a passage matters more than one in a note, because the passage is what you will search for later.

I deleted a book by mistake.

Write to us quickly. A deleted book leaves the app at once but is not erased for another 30 days, so until then it can usually be brought back. After 30 days it is gone for good and we cannot recover it either.

How do I get my notes out?

Open a book's notes and use Share as Markdown at the foot of the list. They are yours, in plain text, whenever you want them.

How do I close my account?

Settings, then Danger zone, then Delete account. That removes your account, your books and your notes immediately and permanently — there is no 30-day window on this one.

Jottings is made by one person. If something is broken, saying what you were doing when it broke is the most useful thing you can send.
